On - Nepal Himalayan Festival in Manchester,
5th & 6th June 2004
For years UK visitors to Nepal, have climbed the mountains,
trekked the foothills and experienced the beauty and uniqueness of this
extraordinary land. Films, expeditions and writings summon images of
a country dominated by the biggest snow covered peaks in the world.
But Nepal is much more than that. It is a land of jungle,
of mountain streams and giant rhododendrons, home to the tiger, elephant,
leopard, sloth bear and over 800 species of birds. A land of ancient
cities and hill villages, of unforgettable sights, sounds and sentiments.
A society of huge contrasts, where cyber cafes, Buddhist
Stupas and sacred cows share crowded city streets, a land renowned for
its celebrated fighting forces, the Ghurkhas, but where spirituality
still matters more than possessions. The birth place of Buddha, where
Hindus and Buddhists live in harmony despite the political uncertainty
of recent years, where harsh living conditions mean arduous lives for
people in remote mountain villages.
The third Manchester Himalayan Festival celebrates all
that is unique about Nepal. Discover why it holds a very special place
in the hearts of all those that visit and why few travellers return
unchanged.
"Manchester City Council is delighted to welcome
the Nepal Himalayan Festival, bringing the chance for visitors and residents
to celebrate this fascinating country. We wish the festival every success
and hope it will grow from strength to strength." Cllr Kath
Robinson Deputy Leader Manchester City Council
Admission to the Festival is free of charge. However this
is a charitable event and most talks will be donation based to cover
costs and assist charities in Nepal.
