I plan
to arrive in Darwin, along with
the support team, in the last week
of June. This is so that we can
make any final preparations needed
for my world record attempt of handcycling
from Darwin to Adelaide, which is
a distance in excess of 3,000K.
Covering this distance, along with
the variable terrain and weather
conditions is hard for me to comprehend
especially when you consider that
from the top of Great Britain (John
O'Groats) to the bottom (Land's
End) is only 1,433K. Nevertheless
I am well into my training regime
and determined to cover the distance.
As with my previous projects
I hope not only to raise the general
awareness of the 'abilities' of
people with a disability but also
to raise a substantial sum of money
for charity.
This particular project will be
in support of Wheelchair Sports
World-wide Foundation (WSW), which
is the funding arm of the International
Stoke Mandeville Sports Federation.
Stoke Mandeville is where rehabilitation
through sport began fifty years
ago when Dr. Ludwig Guttmann used
sport as therapy for soldiers who
had been sent to the hospital with
either spinal cord injuries or amputations,
giving them an opportunity that
no one else dare thought possible.
His foresight of utilising sport
as a method of rehabilitation is
how sport for people with a disability
was started and has grown from strength
to strength, encompassing all disability
groups world-wide.
I am very much hoping that
the fundraising programme in both
Great Britain and Australia will
provide those very much needed funds
for the further development of sport,
coaching, sports medicine and research
for people with a disability.
On behalf of the Wheelchair Sports
Worldwide Foundation I would like
to ask all of those reading this
page, to help by holding some form
of fundraising activity between
now and June the 30th. It can be
anything from a dress up day, a
stall or just donations. We are
also still seeking corporate sponsors.
If you can offer your support and
would like further information then
please contact either myself on
