


Captain Charles Sturt
born April 28th 1795 died on 16th June 1869
was considered the father of Australian
Exploration. Sturt led a number of expeditions
his most famous being the Central Inland
Expedition 1844-1846.
The Expedition
Party left Adelaide in August 1844 a few
months later than they had planned. This
would prove to be their downfall in time
to come. Sturts right hand man was James
Poole who was to tragically perish in the
Simpson Desert at the end of the Expedition.
This was the only casualty.
Captain Sturts
Party consisted of 9 other men, some 200
sheep, 11 Horses, 32 Bullocks, 5 Drays,
1 Horse Dray, 1 Light Cart and 1 Whale Boat.
The weight of
the stores was some seven tons.
