4000KM
TRANS CONTINENTAL WALK FROM ADELAIDE TO DARWIN
| On
March 1st 1999 Ben Sturt
and Steve Macdonald will fly down under
to attempt the last major walk of the
Millennium across the centre of Australia
from Adelaide to Darwin covering some
4000km. The illustrious, dynamic duo
will retrace step for step Captain Charles
Sturts 1844-1845 Central Inland Expedition
of which he spoke many a grave word
with sobering thoughts - |

appeared as if we where the last of
creation amid the desolation and distruction
of the world. There was a solemn stillness
around, not a living thing to be seen,
not an ant, not a cricket, or a grasshopper.
The line of the horizon was as level
as the sea, and the darkness of the
scenery was unbroken by a single plain.
You cannot imagine so dreary a region
or one of such hopeless character -
it was like staring into hell." |

This
is all very true but the two modern
day adventurers see it differently.
The desert
is exciting, frustrating, physically
tiring, exhilarating and satisfying
but never boring. The challenge that
faces these two will test all their
faculties in body and in spirit. This
may paint a picture of romantic imagery
for the two young adventurers but how
soon will that be replaced with the
harshness of reality, trudging on foot
day after day, month after month for
4000km, breathing the heat whilst it
saps body and soul away.
Snakes and
spiders aside the two will also have
to avoid attacks from feral bull camels
in season which can weigh-in at over
a ton each, many past explorers and
cameleers recount stories of vicious
attacks resulting in severe injuries
sometimes even fatal. |
