GLOUCESTERSHIRE OUTDOORS FAST TRACK INSTRUCTOR TRAINING SCHEME

January 2011 for 12 or 13 weeks

South Cerney Outdoor Education Centre (in the Cotswolds), in partnership with The Wilderness Outdoor Education Centre
(in the Forest of Dean), is offering a 12 or 13 week Fast Track Instructor Scheme for those who wish to gain the outdoor experience & National Governing Body (NGB) awards essential for working in the industry. The training will cover the following areas:

• BCU 1 Star (Canoe and Kayak)
• BCU 2 Star (Canoe and Kayak)
• BCU/UKCC Level 1 Coach Training and Assessment (Paddlesports)
• Personal performance awards in Sailing & Windsurfing
• BSCA Mountain Bike (Off-Road Cycling) Leader Award
• RYA Powerboat Level 2
• NNAS Bronze Award Navigation Award
• SWMMLTS Coastal & Countryside Leader - with Camping Endorsement (MLTE approved)
• HSE Approved Outdoor First Aid qualification

There will be an options week when the candidates may choose from the following awards (subject to candidates’ previous experience, holding the pre-requisite awards and sufficient candidates on each option):

• BCU 3 Star Award
• RYA Assistant Instructor
• CWA (Indoor Climbing Award)

Other areas of training will include:
Whitewater paddling, Low ropes, Team Building, Outdoor Climbing, Safeguarding, Health & Safety, Facilitation & Reviewing skills, Expedition skills & Group Management.

The scheme starts in January 2011 and runs for 12 or 13 weeks (1 options week) through to early April 2011 and may lead to seasonal employment for suitable candidates. Delivery of the scheme will run from Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, with the possibility of occasional evening and weekend sessions.

Candidates will be invited in to an open day to experience the activities and training that the two Centres can offer. The minimum acceptable level for entry to the scheme is some ability in paddlesports (canoeing or kayaking), a minimum age of 18 (for NGB registration), some experience in outdoor activities but most importantly an enthusiasm to learn and to work in the outdoor industry. The scheme is priced as a non-residential course & will cost £3799 (this excludes registration and membership fees of the NGB’s which will be the responsibility of the candidate but guidance will be given with this).

A deposit is payable on booking of £1299 and then 2 further payments at monthly intervals of £1250.

The Options Week (if chosen) will cost an additional £320. This scheme may qualify for a Career Development Loan, see:
