Description:
The Outward Bound Trust is seeking to recruit a Senior Instructor, to be based at Outward Bound® Ullswater and Howtown.
This is an exciting time for The Trust as a whole with a new strategic plan that includes a greater and more confident focus on Learning Through Frontier Adventure and the protection of the natural environment. Journeying on the water and in the mountains is an important part of all programmes. This strategic plan includes a significant investment in staff training and development to achieve consistent high quality course delivery. The Howtown Centre, newly rebuilt, ran its first courses in February 08 and programme and resource development remains ongoing. Staff work from both sites based on business / programme needs.
The 5 Senior Instructors along with the Head of Centre are the Centre Management Team. They are line managers for up to 13 Instructors each. They also have daily operational management responsibility for the programme and running of the Centres with a small team of Course Directors reporting to them. This requires them to be not only able to make risk management decisions but also to ensure high quality learning and customer service standards are maintained in all areas. In addition, Senior Instructors have other responsibilities based upon their qualifications and experience, examples being technical advisors for particular activities, or recruitment and induction of instructors.
Applicants are expected to hold a range of coaching or instructional qualifications issued by the RYA, BCU and MLTB in addition to a current, outdoor activities related, First Aid certificate and a full clean driving licence with a Category D1 entitlement. Ideally one or more NGB qualifications will be at a higher level. A background in personal development with young people, gained through outdoor education / development training, youth work, teaching or industry, is essential. Experience in the management of programmes and a small team of staff is preferred.
The successful applicant will therefore be a mature individual with demonstrable energy and enthusiasm for the work of The Outward Bound Trust. They will have a high level of interpersonal skills and be willing to accept significant responsibility and have the ability and desire to work on their own initiative, maintain efficiency and cost control whilst supporting The Trust’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The remuneration package will be based on a salary of between £22,000 - £28,000, depending on experience and qualifications, and benefits include long-term disability and life assurance cover as well as options to join pension and non-contributory private health care schemes. Annual holiday and days off will amount to 133 days and up to eight weeks paid sick leave will be granted in a 12 month period. Appropriate training will be agreed.
The Outward Bound Trust is an equal opportunities employer and this position will be offered subject to satisfactory references, including an acceptable Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau.
Closing date: Monday, 12th May 2008. A full Job Description and Role Description is available from tara.king@outwardbound.org.uk
