Adventure For All courses with the Bendrigg Centre - Cumbria
Course Title Adventure for All
Location Bendrigg - Cumbria
Date Throughout the year

Description:

The Bendrigg Trust was established in 1978 to specialise in courses and activities for disabled and disadvantaged young people. During this period we have developed a reputation as one of the most versatile and forward thinking residential centres in the country.

Groups enjoy a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities and, at the same time learn a great deal about themselves and others. This is especially true when group members from different backgrounds share activities and facilities at the lodge.

We are situated in the open countryside between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. The centre is easy to reach, just a short drive from Junction 36/37 on the M6 Motorway.

The Bendrigg Trust caters for a wide range of groups. We welcome all ages from young people of primary school age to adults. The following is a brief but not exhaustive list of groups that stay on a regular basis -

  • Schools and Colleges.
  • Disabled individuals on Open courses each year.
  • Leaders and Teachers on special courses.
  • Local and National voluntary societies.
  • People with all levels of learning disabilities.
  • People who are mentally ill.

Courses are tailor-made to suit particular needs and to ensure that the programmes fulfil the aims and objectives of the visiting groups. Our staff are experienced and assist visitors with the planning of their courses. A pre-course visit with visual aids can be arranged for the group. A welcome is extended especially to first-time users to view our facilities prior to any course.

Bendrigg welcomes groups from all parts of the British Isles. The aims of these groups are achieved by the wide variety of experiences included within each programme. Whilst being enjoyable, the activities reinforce team awareness. Everyone can experience personal achievement. Importance is given to sharing with others in the lodge and to co-operation in living and working together.

One special feature of the courses is the way we encourage small groups from different backgrounds and abilities to share the Lodge facilities at the same time. These courses promoting integration are not undertaken lightly, and are arranged after consultation with everyone concerned.

Our courses can be made as physically and intellectually stimulating as required, since the activities can be undertaken at any level. However, it is essential that whatever the nature of the programme, the disabilities and medical history of all course members be disclosed before the course commences.

n addition to the activity programme an equally important aspect of a residential stay at Bendrigg Lodge is being involved in the day to day running of the Centre.

Group members will take an active part in organising and carrying out domestic duties including some assistance with cooking, setting tables and washing up. For many with disability this may be their first opportunity to help in the preparation and serving of meals. Guests are also expected to make their own beds and tidy their rooms after use. Staff are always present to provide guidance, assistance and support.

This aspect of a stay at Bendrigg Lodge is fundamental to the aim of promoting personal independence. Living and working with other people is regarded as being complementary to the various indoor or outdoor activities undertaken. The degree of involvment in the daily routine will vary from week to week according to the nature of the course and the abilities of the group.
