Description:
The Road Leader Award is designed for those
leading groups on roads and tarmac cyclepaths. A combined training
and continuous assessment principle through the course means for
all those who are able to meet the award criteria by the end of
the course, they are qualified immediately.
It is ideal for those dealing with all groups cycling
on the road. It suits those not holding other leader qualifications,
or existing mountain bike leaders who wish to use environments
with more technical road features such as busy roads, roundabouts
and traffic lights.
Road terrain
Road terrain is all tarmac surfaced. It includes: cycleways, public
highways and other legally or permissively accesible tarmac routes.
The Road Leader Award is not limited by height or access to a
telephone, provided it is on a public highway. Where it uses permissive
routes or cyclepaths, it is limited to below 600m above sea level
and not more than 21/2km from a public highway or telephone.
Road Leader Combined Course
The Road Leader course is designed so that you leave the course
with the appropriate knowledge to lead groups, helping them to
enjoy cycling. The course utlises the most modern teaching and
assessment methods to help you acheive the requirements of the
Award as well as be assessed in a non-intrusive manner.
A course workbook is used enabling you acquire and keep background
knowledge of the topics covered during the course. Practical sessions
covering group management skills, route planning, ride preparation,
maintenance and navigation as well as dealing with emergencies
are then covered.
The road environment is covered in detail, including how to effectively
manage your group past road furniture and hazards such as busy
roads; junctions; traffic lights; parked cars; other users; roundabouts;
urban environments; rural environments; roadworks and surface
hazards; narrow roads and quiet roads as well as hazards associated
with cyclepaths.
The course duration is 25 hrs tuition run over either three normal
duration days (3 days) or an evening, a long day and a normal
duration day (21/2 days, such as a weekend). With OTC dymanic
