Description:
Walking and Wildlife
Raasay is a fantastic place to come and get away from it all and
just relax and enjoy the wildlife. The island is covered with
heather moorland and lush woodland for you to explore at your
own pace.
The Island has an abundant array of wildlife, from the Raasay
vole that scurries through the underbrush, to magnificent golden
eagles, sea eagles, buzzards and glorious kestrels that fly above
your head.
In the lush forests deer run wild, if you are quiet enough and
lucky enough you may be able to spot one.
While you are straining your eyes to catch a glimpse of a deer,
cast you eyes down to the shoreline and see if you can spot an
otter frolicking in the rich waters.
The water surrounding the Island is also an area where whales
and porpoises are known to frequent. If you have the time head
down to a rocky point and see if you can see any playing gracefully
in the water below you. In total there are close to sixty species
of bird that can be seen on the Island, whether it be on shore,
in woodland or the open moors.
If it's walking you are into, then Raasay will easily accommodate
your needs, whether you are a seasoned professional or just a
beginner.
For the beginners there are plenty of marked walks that you can
easily follow on the Island, or if you are the more adventurous
type then a walk to the tip of the Island may be in order.
Take the time to stop in our Dolphin Cafe and pick up a leaflet
on walking on Raasay.
