SPA Training & Assessment Courses

The Single Pitch Award Scheme

This is the national governing body award for climbers who want to supervise others on single pitch crags. The courses are run by a dedicated climber with extensive knowledge of rock climbing & working in the outdoors. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, have a minimum of 1 years climbing experience and have registered with the MLTW, MLTE or MLTS. The scheme comprises of a 2 day training course which is covers the SPA syllabus followed by a consolidation period which is usually at least 1 year. Candidates can then attend their 2 day assessment course. The courses are based in the beautiful coastal location, of Ty Gwyn Outdoor Centre in Llwyngwril.

The structure of training & assessment are similar though not exactly the same. The courses begin at Sat 8.30am Ty Gwyn Outdoor Centre. We will spend the day at a local crag covering areas including:-
Bottom roping
Top roping
Belaying methods
Abseiling with groups
Anticipating & dealing with problems
Bouldering
We return to the centre for evening meal around 6pm. There will then be an evening session 7-10pm. Sunday, we would normally visit a crag in the north of Snowdonia and cover areas including:-
Guidebooks & environmental issues
Anchor selection & Gear placement
Lead Climbing
Constructing belays
Belaying & lowering from the top
This is then followed by a Climbing Wall session & individual de-briefs. The course would normally finish at 8pm.
