These courses are intended for anyone who is interested in leading groups in the hills, or improving their own knowledge and confidence.

During the course participants will be given an understanding of navigation techniques, first aid and hazard awareness amongst other things.

Course members will need to register with the MLTE and arrive with a decent level of fitness and an enthusiasm to learn. A full kit list will be provided prior to the start of the course.

During the first evening there will be an introduction to the course and what will be involved. This will include an introduction to the Brecon Beacons National Park, an equipment check and menu planning for the overnight camp.

During the first day we will be looking at general and micro navigation techniques, an introduction to timings and pacing, bearing and map work. Also practical sessions on emergency situations will be covered. In the evening there will be an introduction to mountain weather and forecasting as well as looking at the responsibilities of a group leader and leadership skills.

Day 2 should be a hill day somewhere in the Brecon Beacons practicing navigation techniques and detailed micro navigation. During the evening we will look at hazards on the hill and what to do in an emergency situation.

Day 3 will be focusing on the overnight camp. We will be looking at route planning, producing a route card and looking at the equipment needed before heading out onto the hill and to the overnight camping site. After cooking a meal at the site we will head out for a night navigation exercise.

On the final day, after packing up the camp site we will head back to the centre to conclude and review the course.

We will also talk about planning of further training, gaining log book experience and completing the WGL assessment process.
