Advanced Instructor Training Programme (AITP)
Who is the course for:
This course is for outdoor adventurous activity instructors who have completed one season in the outdoor activity industry and finished employment for the winter. You must have a good basic level and mix of National Governing Body competence awards and various coaching/ leadership training or assessments and want to develop into a more competent instructor.
Entry Requirements:
The ideal candidate should have worked a minimum of one season in the outdoor activity industry as an instructor and must hold as a minimum two of the following SPA training, BELA, WGL / ML training and SCA / WCA / BCU kayak or canoe level 2 coaching award or 3* Kayak/Canoe with Canoe/Kayak safety test.
What will you do on the course:
The Instructor Training Programme is designed to enhance and develop your current outdoor pursuits instructional, leadership, technical skills, knowledge and qualifications. You will receive training in flat water, surf, river kayaking and canoeing along with climbing and navigation and mountain leadership to allow you to develop your technical skills.
This training is also designed to help you work towards national governing body awards along with helping you develop your leadership and coaching skills.
How do you study the course:
One day of outdoor industry health and safety theory, vocational knowledge, followed by four days of outdoor pursuits, technical and leadership skills training. Along with college based lectures and activities there is a three week blocked expedition to various mountainous areas throughout the United Kingdom to enhance on your technical skills and also to provide you with further log
book experience for national governing body awards.
Wider basic skills related to the outdoor industry will be incorporated into academic / practical delivery.
The course runs from October to the following July. As part of the course you are required to go on a work placement at an outdoor activity center from April to the end of July this is to gain valuable coaching, leadership and industry experience and to allow for work based assessment to be carried out.
What will you do afterwards:
After successfully completing this course you are able to continue to work in the outdoor activity industry at a more advance instructor level or progress on to a related Foundation Degree (subject to entry requirements).

Main academic and course fees will be available on application, along with funding details. For candidates 19 years of age and over academic fees are not covered by the college, however you can apply for a bursary to help with your course fees.
