Tuesday 2nd May 2000 - Kangchenjunga Base Camp

It has continued to snow all day. John Doyle's team radioed to Base Camp at 1200 that they had again foregone their Rest Day and at 0830 had left Camp 2 and tried to move up the mountain to Camp 3. However, after about 200 metres of ascent they where forced to retreat by the deep new snow which made upward progress impossible. On return to Camp 2 they met up with Andy Hughes, Colin Scott, Dave Pearce and Ady Cole who had managed to battle their way through the snow to make a carry to Camp 2. After their epic performance yesterday the 4 Sherpas had a very well earned rest day at Camp 1. Similarly the "DHL" team had a rest day at Base Camp.

At the 1800 radio check tonight we decided to see what the weather was like overnight and at 0700 tomorrow, if it has continued to snow, we will pull the plug and all teams will return to Base Camp for a couple of days and hopefully allow the snow to consolidate. We are due to ring the FWOC for a weather forecast tomorrow morning so that has now taken on a huge importance.

Today's picture shows the expedition leader with a bottle of Famous Grouse presented by Alan Hinkes this afternoon. We will save the whisky for a suitable celebration!
